Plumber hourly rates in NZ

Published guides put standard plumbing work at $90 to $150 + GST per hour, with call-out fees commonly $60 to $100 on top. Urgent and after-hours work costs more; bigger jobs are usually better quoted fixed-price.

What moves the price

  • Emergency and after-hours rates run well above standard. If it can safely wait for a scheduled slot, it's cheaper.
  • For bathroom or hot-water jobs, ask for a fixed price rather than hours, and compare like-for-like inclusions.
  • Sanitary plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying are licensed trades. Every TCH plumbing profile shows its registration.

Common questions

Hourly or fixed price: which should I ask for?

Hourly suits small, unpredictable jobs. Anything scoped (a hot-water cylinder swap, a bathroom) deserves a fixed written quote.

What makes plumbing quotes differ so much?

Access, the state of existing pipework, and what's included (parts, disposal, certification). Ask each quote to itemise.
