Credentials to check
Restricted building work on a home must be carried out or supervised by a Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP). Where a builder has added their LBP number, their TCH profile shows it, and where we've checked it against the public register the badge carries the date. An Unclaimed listing carries none, so check the LBP register yourself. Master Builders and NZ Certified Builders membership shows the same way.
Do I need a Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP)?
For restricted building work (most structural, weathertightness and fire-safety work on a home), yes, it must be done or supervised by an LBP. Ask for their LBP number and check it on the public register before you commit. Where a builder has added it, their TCH profile shows it.
What should a building quote include?
A clear scope of work, materials, a payment schedule, an estimated timeline, and how variations will be handled. On TCH the quote, variations and progress live on one record so nothing is argued after the fact.
How do I check a builder is who they say they are?
Check their LBP number on the public register, look for trade-body membership on their TCH profile, read reviews from past clients, and see the team they work with. What we've checked against the register carries a Verified badge and the date we checked it; what we haven't is marked self-declared.
