Digger and excavator hire cost in NZ

Digger hire is usually priced with an operator, by the hour or the day, and the machine size sets the rate. Published 2026 guides put a mini digger with operator at roughly $50 to $80 an hour, a standard digger $90 to $120, and a large excavator $150 to $200, with day rates from around $200 for a mini up to $600 to $800 for a large machine.

What moves the price

  • Machine size drives the rate, so match the digger to the job, since an oversized machine costs more and an undersized one takes longer.
  • Rates usually include the operator and basic fuel; float (transport) to and from site can be an added charge.
  • Urban rates (Auckland, Wellington) typically sit above rural areas.

Common questions

Does digger hire include an operator?

With-operator ('wet') hire includes the machine, the operator and basic fuel, the common option for most jobs. Dry hire (machine only) needs a licensed, competent operator of your own.

What size digger do I need?

A mini suits tight sites and small jobs; a standard or large machine suits driveways, foundations and bulk earthworks. A good contractor advises on the size for your job.
