GIB stopping cost in NZ

GIB stopping, finishing the joins in plasterboard before painting, is quoted as labour per square metre, and the finish level is the biggest variable. Published 2026 guides put it at roughly $25 to $70 per square metre, with the standard Level 4 finish for living areas sitting in the middle of that band.

What moves the price

  • NZ uses a five-level finish system. Level 4 is standard for most living areas and bedrooms; Level 5 (for critical lighting or dark paint) costs more.
  • The condition of the plasterboard and the number of joins and corners move the labour.
  • Stopping is usually priced with or after the GIB fixing. Confirm whether fixing is included.

Common questions

What finish level do I need?

Level 4 is the standard for most residential living areas and bedrooms before standard paint. Level 5 suits critical lighting or dark, gloss finishes and costs more, so ask which the quote is for.

Is fixing included in stopping?

Not always. GIB fixing (hanging the board) and stopping (finishing the joins) can be separate line items. Confirm what's in the quote.
