Car service cost in NZ

A standard car service in New Zealand usually runs a few hundred dollars depending on the service type and vehicle. Published 2026 guides put a service at roughly $150 to $450, with independent mechanics charging around $80 to $130 an hour and dealerships higher, and many workshops include a WOF with a service.

What moves the price

  • The service type matters. A basic oil-and-filter is far less than a full or major service with fluids, plugs and inspections.
  • Older vehicles often turn up extra work (brakes, belts, filters) discovered during the service. A transparent workshop shows you before doing it.
  • Dealership rates sit above independents; the trade-off is marque-specific tooling and warranty work.

Common questions

How often should I service my car?

Typically every 10,000 to 15,000 km or once a year, whichever comes first. Check your handbook. Regular servicing is cheaper than the repairs it prevents.

Should the mechanic explain the work first?

Yes. You should approve the diagnosis and cost before repairs go ahead. On TCH the job card shows the fault, the photos and the parts, so the bill is no surprise.
