Heat pump installation cost in NZ

Heat pump pricing depends most on whether it's a single hi-wall unit or a ducted whole-home system. Published 2026 guides put a standard hi-wall unit supplied and installed at roughly $1,500 to $4,000, with most households paying $2,500 to $3,500, and ducted systems from around $7,000 up to $25,000 depending on the home and number of zones.

What moves the price

  • The unit's capacity (kW) has to suit the room. An undersized pump runs flat out and costs more to run. A good installer sizes it to the space.
  • The install itself (pipe run length, wall type and electrical work) moves the labour. The electrical connection must be done by a registered electrical worker.
  • Ducted pricing swings on the number of zones and whether the home is new or a retrofit.

Common questions

What size heat pump do I need?

It depends on the room size, insulation and aspect, not a rule of thumb. A reputable installer assesses the space and specifies the capacity, so ask how they sized it.

Who can install it?

The electrical connection must be done by a registered electrical worker (EWRB), and refrigerant work needs the right handling qualification. TCH shows the registration on the installer's profile.
