Fencing cost in NZ

Fencing is quoted per metre, and the material moves the number most. Published 2026 guides put timber fences at roughly $100 to $250 per metre installed, Colorsteel and metal at $180 to $350, and premium options above $600, with a typical residential fence landing around $6,000 all up.

What moves the price

  • Height, ground conditions and access change the labour more than the palings do. A sloping or rocky site costs more to dig and set.
  • Retaining built into the fence, or a fence above a set height, can need consent. A good fencer flags it before quoting.
  • A boundary fence is usually a shared cost with the neighbour under the Fencing Act, so agree it in writing first.

Common questions

Do I need consent for a fence?

Most standard fences don't, but height limits and any retaining or pool fencing bring rules and sometimes consent. Confirm with your fencer and council before you start.

Who pays for a boundary fence?

Under the Fencing Act, adjoining owners usually share the cost of an adequate fence. Serve a fencing notice and agree the spec and split in writing.
